日本人にとって外国語を学ぶことはどういう意味があるのかについて、ＮＨＫの外国語番組の内容の変遷を分析を行った。外国語を学ぶことは実際のコミュニケーションをはかることよりは、教養としてのものであることが明らかになった。さらに日本人の英語教育観についても言及を行なった。
