My topic will deal with a relationship between the presence of Impressionist paintings and Japanese Traditional Art, and suggests that impressionist painting may have the aesthetic sense of Japonism. Japonism might be considered a general term for the influence of the Japanese culture on those of the West. Impressionists applied their brush-sketch techniques and color spotting to the dynamism of the world as we actually see it in the sunlight. At the same time, they absorbed that daringly truncated compositions and aerial perspectives, derived from Japanese art as Rimpa and Ukiyoe (Wood block prints), in trying to describe the picture plane vividly. During this seminar, I will address the sense of beauty in Japanese art from the standpoint of the design composition.
